Modular helmet customisation

I think a modular helmet customisation system should be implemented before the menus become a bloated list of repeating helmets, many of which are already redundant with the addition of the customisation options we got in the 5.0 update.

At the time of writing, many previously unique helmets, like the ones with green eyes for the assault and heavy classes, now serve no purpose because we can just change the lens colour ourselves on the otherwise identical, previously red eyed versions. There is also an assault helmet with the laurels of victory and a metallic faceplate that becomes redundant should players opt for the new helmet pattern that changes face plate colour.

A great deal of the customisation menu for helmets also consists of identical Mark X helmets, that differ only in their Chapter specific forehead embellishments, from the many varied DLC and heraldry unlocks. In addition to this, many highly anticipated helmet options, like the recent Mark VIII and hooded Mk X variants are only available with said Chapter specific forehead embellishments, limiting player freedom!

Now, the developers could seek to remedy this by adding more versions of these helmets without the Chapter specific iconography, but I fear that will only lead to a bloated list of helmet options down the line, and a long scroll through the menus for players in the future.

I propose that a new, modular system be implemented to combat this issue. Instead of scrolling through an ever growing list of helmet options, players simply choose their helmet model, then select a forehead embellishment, whether that's your basic iron skull or the laurels of victory, to something more chapter specific that we unlock through the heraldry page.

Then we could choose whether we want to wear it with a hood up, or even apply battle damage like the survivors helmet, before continuing on to change helmet pattern and colour like we already can now.

I think this change would open up player freedom in a major way, and be an amazing change to the games customisation system. For example, we could have the battle damage from the survivors helmet with an iron skull and the laurels of victory, or a unique Bulwark helmet with a plume! The options for player choice and expression would be incredible!

I'm speaking from the POV of someone with a limited knowledge of game design, so I'm aware that this would probably take a tonne of work to implement, given that it would require a change to the asset creation pipeline, where existing assets are separated into their constituent modular parts, not to mention the programming side of things to change the menus etc.

But somewhere down the line, should the devs see this and they have some time on their hands, I'd love to see them try this idea out!

Thanks for reading brothers.

I like the idea, and if this require a lot of works from the devs, I wish them no bugs :)

Very good idea! Also can be expanded for all armor pieces/banners/weapons etc. Current implementation is not great not terrible and needs rework.

This is exactly what we need for the longevity of the game in terms of customisation and would reduce the amount of varients of the same helmet flooding the helmet armour page.
I agree it would take some/alot work and time to change the current way they have made the customisation.
Here is a way i think would work for in depth customisation.

In the Custom armour set, the Helm will now only show the base model of the helmet no insignia. Each helmet card will be a diffrent model.
Examples: No helmet, Mark X Tacticus, Mark VIII Ravenwing,
Helmet models will only show if they are compatible to the class of course. no Mark X phobos on Bulwark.
When a Helmet model is selected a option will appear at the botom of the screen and be called customise. The player will hit the assigned key and a menu similar to the heraldry editor will appear and editor boxes like the color patten panel in the heraldry editor. Instead of saying Colour as the title each both would have its own name.
Box 1. Varient ( Mark X tacticus has muitlple varients. Standed varient, Bulwick varient, Survivor/damaged varient. Mrk X phobos also has mutiple varients)
Box 2. Insiginais (skull, Black templar cross, Deathwatch,) only applies to models with a inisgina spot, Mark X phobos does not for instance
box 3. Top Ordiment (centurion plume on tactical0 only applies to models with a Top ordiment spot, Mark X phobos does not for instance
Box 4. side ordiment ( laurelss of victory)
box 4. Front plate ordiment ( Gold plate on tactical or bulwark,)
box 5. Hoods (option to have a hood over the whole helmet, Sniper has its camo hood)
Once customisation is done the player hits the confirm key and the model will change to its customised model.
Everything in the customisation will require requistion points to unlock or complete cetain number of operations to unlock like before, this wiil also stream line customisations in the long future as you will only need to add the one part to each model once instead of adding more varinets of the same helmet.
