Gunstrikes are very fun, and the parry gunstrike combo is very enjoyable. Clearly, blocking is still lacking/has a small niche.
Idea: Lean into the concept of Parry/Gunstrike but give melee more viability.
Possible Solution: Give melee weapons (skill trees) or block weapons an optional melee version of gunstrikes that trigger automatically when you perfect block. (Invulnerability during the attack, like executions, would do less damage than gunstrikes since there's less risk.)
This means you can engage in melee combat more instead of doing most of your damage from gunstrikes.
There's a few things to consider such as:
Animation: Per weapon or just a punch (A punch would be a bit easier dev time-wise, but per weapon would be good)
Weapons: Tied to block weapons or added into the skill tree
Player Agency: Wouldn't want to force people to not be able to gunstrike if they wanted to.
I think this would work a lot better and help the melee combat side of things out a bit. Gunstrikes are very fun and have kind of become the core loop of this game, so why not lean into it to help melee and the block weapon issue.
